Confined Space Gas Detector: Wireless Alarm, Fall Detection

A guy goes into a sewer to clear a blockage. He clips on his 4-gas detector before climbing down. Standard procedure. Fifteen minutes later he doesn’t answer the radio. His attendant climbs in after him. Neither comes out.

The gas readings on both detectors were normal right up until they weren’t. But nobody outside heard the alarm because neither detector could send a signal beyond its own speaker. The guy inside was unconscious. The guy outside never knew.

That’s the whole problem with buying the wrong portable multi gas detector for confined space work. It’s not about gas readings. It’s about who hears the alarm.

This article tells you which detector to buy based on how your team works. Not based on a feature list. Based on whether your attendant can see the entrant or not. That one variable determines everything.

Why a standard 4-gas unit isn’t enough

Your typical $50 к $90 4-gas detector checks four things: кислород, горючий газ, окись углерода, сероводород. That part is fine. Those four cover what OSHA 1910.146 requires.

The problem is everything else.

Confined spaces don’t ventilate. Gases sit where their density puts them. H₂S sinks. Methane rises. CO hangs around everywhere. A detector strapped to your chest reads chest-height air. It doesn’t know what’s above your head or under your feet unless you lower a pump probe to those levels before you enter. Most crews skip that step. They clip on and climb in.

Then there’s the oxygen problem. Normal air is 20.9% О₂. Drop it to 17% and your brain slows. 12% and you’re out. Under 10% and you’re dead. You never feel short of breath because your body reacts to CO₂ buildup, not O₂ depletion. The detector is the only thing that catches it. But only if it can tell someone.

That’s where the cheap units fail completely.

А $50 detector beeps and flashes when gas hits a threshold. It does nothing else. If the person wearing it is unconscious 40 meters down a pipe, that beeping helps exactly nobody. The attendant at the surface hears nothing. The rescue starts when someone glances at a watch and realizes the guy’s been down too long.

A confined space detector does three things differently.

One, it links wirelessly to another unit. The entrant’s alarm fires, the attendant’s unit fires at the same time. LoRa or 2.4 GHz mesh, 100 к 500 метры. Not Bluetooth. Bluetooth inside a steel tank is useless beyond arm’s reach.

Two, it knows when the wearer has stopped moving. Accelerometer inside. Motion stops for too long or a sudden impact registers, the unit enters emergency alarm by itself. No button push needed. Because an unconscious person can’t push a button.

Three, it survives the space. IP66 means a 12.5 mm water jet at 100 liters per minute for three minutes from three meters. IP65 means a light spray. A sewer floods. A tank gets pressure-washed. A silo fills with dust. The environment doesn’t care what your IP rating says. It just does what it does.

Beyond those three, you also want twelve hours of battery minimum and enough storage to log the whole job. Ten-second interval, eight-hour shift: о 2,880 записи. Data stuck on the device doesn’t help the safety officer writing the incident report.

Can the attendant see the entrant?

That’s it. Everything else flows from that.

The attendant cannot see the entrant

Sewer line with a bend. Deep manhole with offset access. Multi-level tank. Tunnel. Pipe crawl where you disappear around a corner. Nobody has eyes on the worker.

The detector is the only link between the person inside and the person who can start a rescue. If it doesn’t link wirelessly and scream when the wearer falls, rescue begins when someone notices the schedule is off. That’s not a safety protocol. That’s gambling.

The worker needs both hands free

Four mistakes that cost more than a detector

Buying on price

А $75 unit with a two-year sensor and a proprietary charger costs more over three years than a $150 unit with a five-year sensor and USB C. Sensor modules run $30 к $60 each. Calibration gas and labor, $50 к $100 per unit per year. Do the three-year total, not the sticker.

Buying without matching the setup

Crew in a shallow vault with the attendant standing right above? Wireless linking is bonus, not necessity. Crew going around a bend in a sewer line? Wireless linking is the only thing between a fallen worker and a rescue. Match the detector to your entry protocol, not to a features comparison chart.

Ignoring the protection rating

Same manhole. Dry all winter. Flooded by a summer storm. IP65 handles cleaning spray. IP66 handles the worst day in that hole. The price difference is small. The certainty difference is not.

Paying for features nobody uses

Eight gases, PID at parts per billion, laser telemetry. Lab tools. Specialized industrial gear. Your confined space needs four gases and the features above. Extra channels add weight, calibration steps, and failure points.


Costs that don’t show up on the invoice

A confined space detector runs $100 к $300. Below that you lose at least one of the three critical features. Above that you are paying for gas channels or sensor tech your crew won’t use.

Sensor replacement, $30 к $60 per channel every few years. Calibration gas and labor, $50 к $100 per unit every year. A proprietary charger that someone lost means a dead detector. USB C or magnetic charging eliminates that failure mode entirely.

Three questions to ask before you buy

Does your detector link wirelessly to another unit? The answer should name a protocol, LoRa or 2.4 GHz mesh, and confirm it connects entrant to attendant. Bluetooth is not the answer for metal enclosures.

Does it detect a fall by itself? Accelerometer inside. Motion stops, alarm fires. SOS button as backup for conscious workers. If the answer iswe have a panic button,” that is a no. An unconscious person cannot press anything.

What is the protection rating and test standard? IP66 or higher, IEC 60529. IP65 is the floor. Below IP65, the unit does not belong anywhere with liquid or dust.
